Gravel Calculator for Volume and Weight
Calculate gravel volume and approximate tonnes from area, layer depth, bulk density and delivery allowance.

Formula
Planning estimate. Check product specifications and local requirements before purchasing.
Worked example: Gravel Calculator
Measurements in this example
| Length | 8 m |
|---|---|
| Width | 4 m |
| Layer depth | 10 cm |
| Bulk density | 1650 kg/m³ |
| Waste allowance | 8 % |
Calculated quantities
| Area | 32 m² |
|---|---|
| Volume | 3.46 m³ |
| Estimated mass | 5.7 t |
What to check
This calculation uses: Length, Width, Layer depth, Bulk density, Waste allowance. It returns: Area, Volume, Estimated mass.
Measure the filled footprint and use the compacted or finished depth. Split triangles and curved borders into simple shapes.
Area multiplied by layer depth gives volume. Delivery allowance is added before volume is multiplied by the editable bulk density.
Order bulk material by the unit used by the supplier. Moisture, grading and compaction explain why a quoted tonne may cover a different volume.
Do not confuse loose delivery depth with finished compacted depth. Confirm whether the supplier quotes loose or compacted volume.
Use the units beside each field. The values in the worked example are starting inputs; replace them with your measurements and the specifications of your material.
